Looking for the perfect new salon, stylist or cut? Here are a few tips to make the hunt a bit easier.

The perfect hairdresser can be more elusive than the perfect romance. Finding a stylist who is a good communicator and an artful beautician requires more than a shot from Cupid's bow. Here are a few suggestions for success in finding Mr. (or Ms.!) Right at the salon.

Getting RecommendationsClients looking for a new hairdresser can start close to home. Friends, family and neighbors are often the best resources. These people know the area, know the client and know the budget parameters. Thus they are frequently able to make the best recommendations.

Beauty professionals suggest asking strangers for the name of a good stylist. Those shopping for a new salon can be on the lookout for haircuts they like. Asking a stranger for the name of their hairdresser takes a little courage, but most people are happy (and flattered) to discuss the topic.

Salespeople in trendy clothing stores or at makeup counters are also a good source of information. Working in the fashion and beauty industry, these folks tend to know the hottest salons and best hair designers.

Going for a ConsultationAfter receiving several recommendations, prospective clients should set up an appointment for an initial consultation with the new hairstylist. Most hairdressers are happy to provide a free consultation before a cut or color service.

Topics discussed at this consultation should include:

  • Hair texture, length and history of past treatments.
  • Client lifestyle, employment, hobbies.
  • Desired style. (It may be helpful to bring in photos.)
  • Time and effort available for daily hair maintenance.
  • Past hair successes and disappointments.
  • Frequency of future hair appointments.

After a detailed conversation, the new stylist should be able to make suggestions for hair cut and color options.

Tips for a Good Haircut

  1. If at all possible, clients should schedule a morning appointment. It has been proven that stylists do their best work before noon.
  2. It is best to sit flat during a haircut. Sitting with legs crossed can create an uneven posture, resulting in a lopsided cut.
  3. Clients should avoid wearing hoop earrings or other large pieces of jewelry.
  4. As the hairdresser is styling, clients can watch closely and ask questions. Part of a stylist's job is helping his client learn to recreate the look at home.
  5. If professional styling products are recommended, clients needn't feel pressured to purchase them all. Asking the hairdresser to select just one "must have" product is a more budget-friendly approach.

Finding a new stylist can be difficult. Keys for success in finding the perfect hairdresser are trusted recommendations and good communication.
